Welcome yourself to the emotional gothic souls-like horror that is Bloodborne, a strange, unconventional take on the action-adventure game by developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.
Bloodborne followed the player, a hunter, through the decrepit gothic Victorian era streets of Yharnam whose inhabitants have been cursed with a blood-borne disease – thus the name of the game. The objective, seeking the source of the plague and unraveling the source of the plague and undoing the mystery while fighting the cosmic horrors the lurk amid the city’s cobblestones.
The game is played in a third-person perspective and its punishing souls-like gameplay directs the player with reflex weapons-based combat and exploration. Blocking and dodging become paramount with little health and regeneration based on landing blows.
Bloodborne is a brutal souls-like game with a risk-reward gameplay
Bloodborne delivers a variety of different weapon styles that allow for different styles. For example, the ax may initially provide a light swing attack for fighting in tight quarters, but it can also be switched to a heavier attack that can stagger attackers.
There are also secondary weapons, such as pistols, that can be used to stun attackers, that can be used to put attackers into a state where they can be dealt a massive amount of damage. Other secondary weapons include a whip, a wooden shield, a torch, a cannon, a sword, and a two-handed gun.
Players can also earn “Blood Echoes,” which serve as a sort of experience points in the game. When they die, these can be lost. Sometimes they can be lost forever, or picked up by enemies, displayed by glowing blue eyes, and can be recovered by players, by returning to the point where they were lost and defeating those enemies again to recover them.
The town of Yharnam has many stories to tell, many of them told by other players
Bloodborne is a story told in many layers.
The story of Bloodborne consists of almost 60 hours of gameplay and exists across not just a vast map of the city of Yharnam and deep dungeons but also procedural spaces called Chalice dungeons.
These dungeons are randomly generated by performing a ritual with a Chalice and other certain materials in the Hunter’s Dream realm. Chalice Dungeons are optional and provide additional content for the player and contain numerous additional bosses and lootable chests.
It is also possible for players to activate a multiplayer mode for players to gain the assistance of other players to help with boss battles or large groups of enemies, and progress cooperatively. Of course, this also leaves players vulnerable to invasions by hostile players – unless the players can find and defeat an enemy known as a Chime Maiden before an enemy player invades.
Bloodborne began its gothic descent into blood disease and cosmic horror for PlayStation 4 in 2015.
