This action-adventure hack and slash title brings back old protagonists to fight demons once again and save the world from Earth-shattering magics. Devil May Cry 5 pits Dante, Nero and a new character named “V” against the Demon King Urizen in what is essentially another proper installment of the Devil May Cry series.
Developed and published worldwide by Capcom was directed by Hideaki Itsuno, well known for his work on the Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma series.
Much likes previous titles in this series, players will be thrust into situations involving multiple opponents that they must defeat with their signature weapons. These fights are heavily combo-based and focus heavily on “stylish-action,” where players are rewarded for committing combos and actions that link well together and defeat multiple enemies.
Players will be graded after every sequence on how “stylish” they were based on successful dodges, damage taken and the length of combos executed.
Devil May Cry 5 features three characters: Nero, Dante and the mysterious “V”
Three different characters are available, as mentioned above, with the first being Nero from Devil May Cry 4. He still features his Red Queen sword for melee combat and the Blue Rose double-barreled revolver. He has lost his demonic arm, but now has an assortment of robotic arms called Devil Breakers instead. These can be used to grab enemies at a distance, stop time in order to freeze an enemy in place or a number of other functions.
The second character is Dante, who plays similarly to how he did in DMC 4, and can change between four different styles to create new moves or parry incoming attacks. He still carries his signature blade Rebellion and the demonic sword Sparda. Dante make use of new Devil Arms, a pair of buzzsaw-like weapons that combine into a motorcycle when needed called the Cavaliere. He also wears flaming gauntlets and boots called Balrog and carries a stronger version of the Cerberus nunchaku.
Finally, there is the mysterious “V” whose connection to the evil Demon King Urizen is revealed over the course of the story. His weapons of choice are a book and a stylish silver cane – and he uses three demons from the first game to fight. These demons are the Griffon, an eagle with ranged lightning claws; Shadow, a panther formed out of spikes and portals; and Nightmare, a large golem.
Online features add an interesting dimension to Devil May Cry 5
There isn’t much to set DMC 5 apart from the rest of the series, but it does provide some interesting new social connections in its online mode.
Players may sometimes see other hero characters fighting on the sidelines, dispatching demons and wading through fodder. These may in fact be other players going through their own games. It is also possible for team-ups to happen and when they do, players can combine their efforts in taking down demon hordes.
