The world of Eorzea needs heroes to save it from a host of problems from rising Primals to magic gone wild in Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn. FFXIV is a massively multiplayer role-playing game with a robust gaming system, a massive fashion game, and a dedicated population.
Final Fantasy XIV Online is developed and published by Square Enix and the “A Realm Reborn,” subtitle is a reference to the relaunch of the game after the first launch had some troubles with its user experience and shut down in 2012. The second launch, or “rebirth,” of FFXIV in 2013 proved to be far more successful and now the game is one of the most popular MMOs in the world.
Eorzea is a massive 3D world filled with vibrant characters and epic tasks
FFXIV uses a free camera with 3D environments in an RPG setting. Upon joining the game, players choose a class, which in the game is called a job, that they can change at any time. Initial classes can be leveled up and eventually changed into elite classes that evolve from basic classes – some advanced classes require mastering multiple basic classes.
In this manner, a player can choose what sort of class they want to run as during any given gaming session and therefore are not stuck in one role as damage dealing, tanking, or healing support.
Job roles also include crafting and gathering such as mining or blacksmithing. FFXIV also has a thriving player-invested and -run virtual economy run through a market where players can exchange resources and finished items for gil – the fantasy currency of Eorzea.
Combat in FFXIV consists of a standard RPG hotkey system with an action tray at the bottom of the screen. A player locks onto a target, then uses basic attacks or sets of more advanced attacks to whittle down enemy hit points; at the same time, players can use defensive and support spells to boost themselves and friends. The system uses Tab-targeting and a long global cooldown to allow for more strategic decisions on what attacks and spells to choose.
FFXIV’s storytelling is second-to-none for engagement and emotional experience
FFXIV’s story is extensive and represents years of content being built onto the game. The game has seen multiple huge expansions including Stormblood, Heavensward, and now Shadowbringers. Each of these expansions added new dungeons, raids, and story quests – as well as new classes that could be unlocked and played.
The music of FFXIV includes orchestral compositions by Masayoshi Soken and references to music from previous Final Fantasy titles. The music is lilting, uplifting and includes compositions and reused pieces from the original game principally composed by Nobuo Uematsu, with assistance from Soken, Tsuyoshi Sekito, and Naoshi Mizuta.
Although much of FFXIV is in a different setting from other Final Fantasy games, the music, monsters, and some characters are still iconic to the entire series. This includes moogles, a game mascot, and chocobos, giant birds used as mounts.
Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn re-launched on Windows PC and PlayStation 3 in 2013, PlayStation 4 in 2014 and Mac OSX in 2015.
